Product Description

Fender introduces one of its most distinctive signature models ever, the Kurt Cobain Jaguar - meticulously modelled on the battered and highly unusual 1965 Jaguar that Cobain wielded during the heady early-’90s era when Nirvana ruled rock and led a musically stunning and culturally subversive movement.

Fender craftsmen have reproduced Cobain’s battle-hardened left-handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls (which were already in place when Kurt acquired the guitar in summer 1991).

Unique features include an Alder body with Road Worn aged finish and hardware treatment, bound fretboard with pearloid dot markers, Stratocaster headstock shape with 1950s-style “spaghetti” logo, DiMarzio humbucking DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary neck pickup and DP100 Super Distortion bridge pickup, triple knurled “chrome-dome” knob configuration (volume-volume-tone), three-position toggle switch, black chrome Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and Gotoh sealed tuners.

Accessories include a black textured vinyl hard-shell case and an exclusive Fender Kurt Cobain book with photos and commentary by Charles Peterson and an insightful interview with Nirvana guitar tech Earnie Bailey.

The headstock is fresh off of a Strat, an aged satin finish to the front, cracking and chips all present, with Fenders gold spaghetti logo on the front and JAGUAR in block letters. 2 string trees keep pressure on the 4 treble strings.

Around the back, the same aged finish, more cracking lacquer and the guitars serial number. A row of 6 tatty Gotoh machine heads appear to have been retro fitted, with the original screw holes in the wrong places still there.

The Maple neck is a C shape, it feels fairly chunky, and again, this has a few dinks and dents, the finish is a smooth aged gloss, but with the wear and playing, it's pretty much satin.

The fingerboard on the Kurt Cobain Jaguar is Rosewood, fully bound in bright white plastic up both sides. The board has a 9.5" radius and 22 medium jumbo frets with large pearl dot inlays. It's a very nice playing neck, smooth and flat, fretwork is excellent and it all feels a bit played in.

Set up well from the Mexican factory, this model has a low action of about 3mm across the board at the 12th fret.

The neck is bolted to the Alder body, joining at the 17th fret on the bass side and 20th on the treble, the shallow cutaway here gives excellent access to all 22 frets. The back of the neck join has a scratched Chrome neck plate with 4 bolts and a very nice Fender logo with 2 cables underneath, designed to match a sketch that Kurt drew at some point.

The back of the body has a 3 tone sunburst finish, again all aged, so there is a large bare patch on the upper ribcage contour, more towards the strap button and plenty of buckle rash, with more chipping on the lower bout near the jack socket.

I would add this is a fairly heavy guitar.

The front is less aged than the back, some chipping around the controls and various cracking going on.

The scratchplate is an aged red shell, 4 ply with some dirt and grime on the edges, and 3 Chrome controls plates are also well used.

Which brings me onto the controls - heavily modified. The upper bout near the strap hook has a switch to flick between the 2 tone circuits, lead and rhythm, and rotary dials for tone and volume on the lead circuit. Pretty standard so far.

Lower down underneath the pickups is a 3 way Les Paul style selector switch with a bright white tip. This replaces the sliding switches that were used to select which pickups were on or off - much simpler.

Lower down, the 2 volume controls, one for each pickup and tone control for the rhythm circuit, and the output socket.

The bridge is a tune-o-matic Gibson style in tatty black, and the Jaguar has a floating tremolo tailpiece with a massive long tremolo bar and lock button that doesn't seem to do anything! These tailpieces are notoriously rattly, but I'm happy to say this one definitely behaves itself, even keep tune pretty well.

Onto the pickups, saving the best 'till last, a pair of very hot DiMarzio's, again aged to smoke yellow with rusty screws and polepieces, and black plastic surrounds.

The DiMarzio's are truly amazing pickups. Loads of power, you'll need to turn the gain down! On a clean channel, thumping clarity, on the overdrive, just thumping. The neck is great for lead work with piercing shrills and loads of sustain. The Nirvana riffs Cobain was famous for come through on the neck pickup.

The 2 tone channels are very different, with the standard (lead) controls having loads of brilliance and top end, the rhythm circuit being a much muddier, bluesy king of sound.

Not just for Nirvana fans, this is an amazing guitar in its own right. Playability is high, looks and vibe are fantastic, and sounds wise, a true rocker that will be perfect for all rock and metal duties.
